About this riding club

The roots of Somes Saddle lie in making horse tack.
Utashinai, Hokkaido, was once a prosperous coal-mining town with a population approaching 50,000.
However, its population declined as energy use shifted toward oil.
Against that background, Somes Saddle was founded in 1964 as part of an effort to attract new businesses.
Horses had supported the development of Hokkaido since the Meiji era, alongside the skills of tack makers.
The aim was to preserve and pass on those skills, and make tack that could compete on world markets.
Tack craftspeople gathered here, beginning a new challenge to reach the very top.
