Friezean Horse Breed
特徴的なたてがみと青毛
最初に紹介するのは、神秘的かつ上品な外見で人気の“フリージアン・ホース”です。オランダ北部のフリースラント州原産とされ、詳細な記録はないものの、かなり古くから存在すると考えられています。
最も注目すべきは、豊かなたてがみと深い青毛で、たてがみは胴体下まで伸びることもあります。ウェーブのかかったたてがみや尾は特に美しく、フリージアンホースの歩様である“ハイステップトロット”の時にたてがみが風になびくさまは神秘的です。
稀に青毛以外の毛色も出現しますが、原産国のオランダで純血種と認定されるのは青毛のみ。その美しい青毛から、欧米では棺を曳く馬車馬としても重宝されてきました。
筋肉質な体格
写真では大きく見えますが、実際は平均身長160cmほどで、サラブレッドとほぼ同じです。体重は約600kgで、筋肉質でしっかりした体格です。競走馬のサラブレッドは400kg台半ば、乗馬用のアングロアラブは500kg台が一般的です。
豊かなたてがみからもわかるように、フリージアンホースは森林に暮らす“林業馬”の血を引いています。足場の変化に富む森の中でも確実に動けるよう、脚は短く、足腰が強いのが特徴です。中世には重い甲冑を着た騎士を乗せて軍馬としても活躍しました。
映画や競技で活躍
ヨーロッパの童話の世界から飛び出したような外見のフリージアンホース。その外見だけでなく、穏やかな性格も相まって映画や馬術競技でも活躍しています。ファンタジー映画を観るときに注目してみると良いかもしれません。

アハルテケ種
輝く“黄金の馬”
次に紹介するのは、トルクメニスタン原産の品種“アハルテケ”です。トルクメニスタンは国土の8割以上を砂漠が占める過酷な土地ですが、6世紀にテュルク系民族が支配した後はモンゴル帝国の一部となり、遊牧民と深く関わる歴史があります。
アハルテケの特徴は、その輝くような黄金色です。さまざまな毛色がいますが、最も美しいのは月毛と呼ばれるクリーム色の個体でしょうか。多くは毛色を薄くする「希釈遺伝子」を持ち、月毛や砂色（かわらげ）、サメ毛などが見られ、金属光沢のある被毛とともに、アハルテケは“黄金の馬”と呼ばれるようになりました。

その繊細な毛色からは想像できませんが、アハルテケは非常に持久力に優れ、300キロ以上の砂漠の横断も記録しています。まるでマラソン選手のように、驚くべきスピードと耐久性を持つアハルテケは、馬術のエンデュランスや障害馬術でも活躍しています。
